A TRAVEL GUIDE TO THE BULGARIAN BLACK SEA COAST
Bulgaria, in southeastern Europe, bounded by Romania to the north and Turkey to the south, enjoys a prime location at the meeting of Europe and Asia. Average sea temperatures on the Black Sea coast are in the region of 25 degrees Celsius, during the summer months. Over 230 miles in length, it features some 70 beaches, many large and sandy, and all calm and safe, many with lifeguard supervision. The low salt content of the Black Sea makes it particularly pleasant for swimmers.
Resorts
Golden Sands
`Golden Sands` is the largest resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The beach, from which the resort takes it name, is roughly two and a half miles long and up to 100 yards deep. Average summer temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius, and the purest sand in the whole of the region, mean that Golden Sands justifies its reputation as one of the pearls of the Black Sea.
Sunny Beach
Sunny Beach is the largest beach resort in Bulgaria. The beach, itself, is long and wide, and has been awarded the European Union Blue Flag for cleanliness.
Varna
The city of Varna is often referred to as the `seaside capital` of the country. Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and a major tourist destination.
Attractions
The Aladzha Monastery, dating from the twelfth century, is situated just south of Golden sands. `Aladzha` is the Turkish word for `colourful,` and the name is derived from the wall paintings with which the monastery was originally adorned. For the more active, there are seven swimming pools, plus facilities for tennis, volleyball, basketball and horse riding. Children are well catered for, with organised activities and puppet shows. The `Aquapolis` water park, to the north west, is one of the biggest attractions and considered one of the best in Europe. The promenade area of is busy by day and night. It is lined with bars, cafes and restaurants serving a whole range of international cuisine, as well as traditional local dishes. Prices are generally very competitive.
Sunny Beach provides opportunities for sunbathing and swimming, along with a full range of water sports. Children can enjoy playground facilities, and organised activities and competitions. Action Aquapark is a major attraction for the young, or young at heart. Thirteen water attractions provide a challenge to all age ranges. Lifeguards are on hand to guarantee safety. Cocktail bars and restaurants are located throughout the park. Many establishments provide music, dancing and live floorshows. There are many nightclubs, late night bars and casinos.
Varna boasts the only dolphinarium on the Balkan Peninsula, and its daily shows are a star attraction, particularly with younger visitors. Its glass construction allows visitors to wonder at the intelligent playfulness of these graceful mammals. Some eleven miles west lies the Petrified Forest. This is a unique natural phenomenon, where the limestone columns are prehistoric trees, fossilized in their natural, upright positions.
ACCOMMODATION
Whatever the size of your party, or budget, you will find holiday rental accommodation to suit on the Black Sea coast. Self-catering accommodation can add a degree of freedom. Holiday accommodation is available in may shapes and sizes, for long or short term let. You might like to choose an apartment in a modern complex, complete with private pool, just five minutes from the sea. For a larger group another option is a villa, perhaps in an elevated position, with panoramic views of the Black Sea. Accommodation is usually fully furnished, to a reasonable standard, and air-conditioned.
