Veliko Turnovo is the ancient capital of Bulgaria and the old parts cling to the mountain side above the river below. A fortress guards the city and there are beautiful cobbled streets and timber built houses. It is a fantastic city to explore with loads of history and culture. The surrounding area is very pretty with some lovely traditional villages.  Gabrovo is the 'capital of humour' and is a nice town very close to the Balkans. Close by is the ethnographical museum of Etara and a number of monasteries.
