Vidin is one of the oldest towns along the Bulgarian Danube bank. Its most famous landmark is the Baba Vida fortress (above left) built in the 9th and 10th Centuries on the ruins of a Roman fortress. During the First Bulgarian Kingdom it was known as Budin (Bdin) or Bishop's centre. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom it was a strong fortress and after 1371, a capital of the Vidin Kingdom under Tsar Ivan Sratsimir. Nowadays it is the starting point for excursions along the Danube and a place to explore the surrounding mountains and forests from. A ferry links Vidin with Kalafat in Romania but a bridge is planned to join the two cities and this will increase Vidin's commercial standing. A university is also to be built.
